Covid Information

Dear families,

As the term progresses and the weather starts to change we are now having to look again at the Covid symptoms and clarify for all what the policy is.

There is no clear distinction between an asthma cough and and a Covid cough to a young child, and many of us seem to have a a bit of a sore throat at the moment.

Our clear position is that we do not want a Covid case in school.

However, in order to clarify for staff and parents we will:

  • Use the original 3 Covid  symptoms as our guidance for judging how well the children are. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and tiredness.
  • If a child has a temperature over 38 degrees, he/she is sent home and asked to take a LFT test. The child remains at home until the temperature goes down and/or other symptoms develop. If they do, then the child remains at home for 10 days.
  • If a child has a cough, then a call is made to the parents and the individual case of the child is discussed. If the child suffers from asthma for example, then the parent can explain this and we agree that the child stays at home until the cough subsides or the child can return to school. Regardless, parents look out for other symptoms and if these develop, then the child isolates for 10 days.
  • If a child has diarrhoea, and another main symptom, then the child isolates for 10 days. Otherwise the child stays at home for the 48 hours as usual. The advice over diarrhoea is quite vague and therefore cannot be applied across the board.
  • Other less common symptoms - sore throat, aches and pains, red eyes, rash - should not be viewed in isolation but in combination with other symptoms. Any of these and a fever mean the children should stay at home until the symptoms subside.  This may be 10 days .

We have a responsibility to respect parents' opinions and experiences with the child and therefore listen to any previous or on-going health issues the child may have. A call to the parents from school and a discussion should enable us to make the right decision .

The stance remains that we do not want Covid in the school and we will err on the side of caution in dealing with each case.

Thank you for supporting the school in this way.

Best wishes

Joe
