Welcome to Year 3 Hornbeam Class!
Last term, Hornbeam class really enjoyed their English learning as they went on an adventure with the characters Shen and Sika to find the Snowfather's icicle palace. The story, 'Pugs of the Frozen North' grabbed the children's attention and inspired them to create their own Kraken's, write in character and reenact scenes from the book as part of drama activities. This term we have started with Meredith Hooper and Chris Coady's 'The Pebble in my Pocket'. The book tells the journey of a pebble from its origins, 480 million years ago, until it takes its place in the modern world. Already the children have taken part in drama activities such as Reader's Theatres to explore how Hooper creates images of the planet through her language, while remaining a non-fiction text. Hornbeam class are really enjoying the links between the book and our IPC History and Science unit 'Footprints from the Past'. We are learning about the Mesozoic Era, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and how we know about the existence of dinosaurs. Our next piece of extended writing will be an information poster explaining how sedimentary rock is formed.
In Maths, the children are building on their knowledge of multiplication and division from Year 2 and extending their learning to increase their fluency in the 3, 4 and 8 times-tables. We will continue to practise addition and subtraction, revising our learning from last term on written method so we are confident in doing this with exchanges.
