Welcome to Year 3 Hornbeam Class!
The pupils in Hornbeam class have impressed us all with the way they have adapted to life in Key Stage Two. They have started the new academic year with a mature, enthusiastic and inquisitive manner.
The children have embraced our first Power of Reading book, Gregory Cool – the story of a young boy who travels to the Caribbean island of Tobago to visit his grandparents and cousin. They have reflected on the main character’s initial feelings of sorrow. The children have discussed the points at which the reader sees Gregory’s feelings change into his final joy and recognition of the comfort and wonders Tobago has to offer him. The Year 3 staff now can’t wait to see the information writing and poetry this book will inspire in the children.
As always, our Power of Reading book links with our IPC topic which is the geography based unit Island Life. We have been using Google Earth to identify islands around the world, as well as learn more about the island we all live on – the United Kingdom.
In Maths, we have started the year with place value, which includes representing and partitioning numbers all the way up to 1,000. Looking ahead, over the next half-term we will be focussing on addition and subtraction, with a specific focus on the column methods.
This academic year, the children will be learning how to play the recorder with our new Music teacher, Alex. We are sure they will quickly progress with their learning.
