Welcome to Year 5 Aspen Class!

We have had a great start to the summer term! The children have already dived into our new topics, and it has been wonderful to see them exploring the future of sustainable energy. As part of Our Planet Needs You (OPNY), the children have been working hard on a sustainability project, and we were all very impressed with their final video. We are hopeful that it will help generate donations towards an exciting goal -raising funds to install solar panels for our school.

The children have been considering practical ways to protect our planet and improve the sustainability of our local environment. Alongside this, they are taking part in a range of ongoing projects, including litter picking, collecting pre-loved clothes, and carrying out a school grounds green survey to identify areas for improvement.

We would greatly appreciate your support with our fundraising efforts -please consider making a donation using the QR code provided. Every contribution will help us move closer to making our school more environmentally friendly.

In English, we have begun reading Macbeth (Shakespeare’s story edition by Leon Garfield). This unit will involve a range of engaging activities including drama, script writing, diary entries and comprehension work, helping the children to develop both their creativity and understanding of the text.

In Maths, we will continue following the White Rose scheme. This term’s learning will cover perimeter and area, decimals, statistics, properties of shape, geometry, and converting measurements.

In IPC, we will begin by exploring Extreme Survivors, where the children will learn about how plants and animals adapt to survive in challenging environments, including studying life cycles. Following this, we will move on to Water for Everyone, which looks at the water cycle, as well as exploring countries that experience flooding and drought, and the important issue of water pollution.

The excitement continues as we prepare to work with ‘Young City Makers’, which includes an upcoming trip in the next few weeks. These opportunities provide invaluable real-world context to our classroom learning. With plenty of engaging activities and trips planned, it promises to be a busy and rewarding term for Year 5.
